Mod Central
E30 M3 (1986-1991)
The E30 M3 is where it all started—a homologation special built for Group A touring car racing. Featuring a high-revving 2.3L naturally aspirated inline-4 (S14) and a lightweight chassis, the E30 set the standard for future M3s.Pros:
- Raw driving experience – Lightweight, engaging, and responsive.
- Motorsport heritage – Developed for touring car dominance.
- High collectibility – Prices have skyrocketed due to rarity and will only continue to grow.
Cons:
- Not the fastest – Only 192 hp, much slower than later M3s.
- Expensive to buy & maintain – Rare parts and high demand.
E36 M3 (1992-1999)
The E36 M3 was a huge leap forward in refinement, comfort, and daily usability. Powered by a 3.0L (later 3.2L) inline-6 (S50/S52), it was the first M3 to break the 300 hp mark.Pros:
- Balanced performance – More powerful than the E30 but still lightweight.
- Affordable (compared to other M3s) – Still a great entry-level M car.
- Good daily driver – Comfortable yet fun.
Cons:
- Not as raw as E30 – Heavier and more refined.
- Build quality issues – Interior materials wear out over time, rust is another big issue for UK E36's.
E46 M3 (2000-2006)
The E46 M3 is considered by many to be the best M3 ever made, thanks to its perfect balance of power, handling, and everyday usability. Its 3.2L inline-6 (S54) produces 343 hp, revving to 8,000 RPM—making it one of BMW’s greatest engines. Extra points the inline 6 NA noises!Pros:
- Incredible handling – Razor-sharp steering and chassis balance.
- High-revving masterpiece – The S54 engine is legendary.
- Timeless design – One of the best-looking M3s ever.

E92 M3 (2007-2013)
The E92 M3 was a major departure from tradition, featuring a 4.0L naturally aspirated V8 (S65) producing 414 hp. It’s the only M3 with a V8, making it truly unique.Pros:
- Amazing V8 soundtrack – High-revving and sounds exotic, arguably the best sounding Euro V8 of it's time.
- Naturally aspirated feel – No turbos, just instant throttle response.
- Still relatively affordable – Prices haven’t spiked as much as E30/E46.
Cons:
- Rod bearing failures – Expensive maintenance required.
- Heavier than previous M3s – Not as nimble as E46.
F80 M3 (2014-2019)
The F80 M3 was the first M3 to feature a turbocharged engine, using a 3.0L twin-turbo inline-6 (S55) producing 425 hp (or more in Competition models). This generation is known for its brutal acceleration and modern tech.Pros:
- Very tunable – Easy to push over 500+ hp with simple mods.
- Best bang for buck- The newer G80 has brought down the price of the F80 making it arguably the best generation for blend of performance, luxury and price.
- Supporting Mods – Now 10 years old there are a lot of supporting mods available for the F80.
Cons:
Artificial steering feel – Lost some of the analog charm. Harsh ride quality – Suspension can be too stiff for daily driving. BMW' F80 is a great platform for tuners and speed enthusiasts looking for big power and modern tech.G80 M3 (2021-Present)
The latest G80 M3 is the most powerful and advanced M3 ever, featuring a 3.0L twin-turbo inline-6 (S58) with up to 503 hp (Competition model). It’s also available with xDrive AWD, making it the fastest M3 ever made.Pros:
- Supercar-like performance – Faster than any previous M3.
- All-wheel drive option – xDrive makes it usable in all conditions.
- More Body Options- The G81 is the first estate M3, opening itself to a larger audience and stealing sales from Audi and Mercedes.
Cons:
- Divisive styling – The large grille isn’t for everyone.
- Heavier than ever – Over 1,800 kg, making it the heaviest M3 ever made.
