The Mercedes-AMG C63 has been one of the most exciting performance sedans and coupes since its debut in 2008. Known for its brutal V8 power, aggressive styling, and raw driving experience, the C63 has evolved across four generations, each bringing more performance, technology, and refinement.
But which C63 generation is the best? From the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 (W204) to the bi-turbo V8 (W205) and the controversial four-cylinder hybrid (W206), we’ll compare them all to determine which truly stands out.
W204 C63 AMG (2008-2015)
The W204 C63 AMG is a fan favorite because of its legendary 6.2L naturally aspirated V8 (M156 engine), producing 451 hp in the standard version and 480 hp in the Performance Pack. Later models, like the C63 507 Edition, pushed power to 507 hp.
This generation is raw, aggressive, and offers one of the best-sounding V8s ever made. It came in sedan, coupe, and estate variants, all sending power to the rear wheels via a 7-speed automatic transmission, which makes for a raw, loud and powerful driving experience.
Pros:
- Naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 – No turbos, just pure power.
- Incredible sound – One of the best-sounding AMG engines.
- Engaging and aggressive driving feel – Old-school muscle car vibes.
Cons:
- Thirsty for fuel – The NA V8 loves petrol.
- Heavy front end – Can be tricky in corners.
- Expensive maintenance – Common head bolt failures and timing chain issues.
Best for: Purists and enthusiasts who want a naturally aspirated, high-revving V8 experience.

W205 C63 AMG (2015-2021)
The W205 C63 AMG marked the shift to forced induction, replacing the 6.2L V8 with a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 (M177 engine). It produced 469 hp in the standard model and 503 hp in the C63 S, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission.
This model introduced a lighter chassis, more refined interior, and advanced technology, making it a much more usable and daily-friendly AMG. It was available as a sedan, coupe, convertible, and estate.
Pros:
- Twin-turbo power – More torque and faster than the W204.
- Better handling – More balanced chassis and improved suspension.
- Tuning potential – Simple remap pushes 600+ hp and even more with some bolt ons.
Cons:
- Lacks the raw character of the W204 – Turbo V8 is powerful but not as emotional.
- Sound isn’t as iconic – Turbochargers mute the traditional AMG growl (Nothing a set of sport cats can’t fix though).
Best for: Drivers who want modern technology, big power, and tuning potential while keeping the AMG spirit alive with a V8.

W206 C63 AMG (2023-Present)
The latest W206 C63 AMG is the most controversial C63 ever. It ditches the V8 for a 2.0L four-cylinder hybrid system, producing a staggering 671 hp and 1,020 Nm of torque.
It features all-wheel drive (4MATIC+), an electric turbocharger, and a 9-speed gearbox, making it the fastest and most powerful C63 yet. However, many enthusiasts miss the V8 character and has caused it to become a commercial flop. Especially when comparing it to its rivals who have stayed true to their owners.
Pros:
- Insanely fast – Hybrid tech delivers instant torque.
- Fuel-efficient – compared to past models.
- All-wheel drive traction – No more wheelspin. (Not always a positive)
Cons:
- No V8, no AMG soul? – Doesn’t have the classic AMG rumble.
- Heavier than previous models due to hybrid components.
- More complex technology – Possible long-term reliability concerns, too soon to tell though.
Best for: Buyers who prioritize speed, efficiency, and cutting-edge technology over traditional AMG character.

Which Mercedes C63 AMG Is the Best?
Each C63 generation has its own strengths, but if we had to rank them based on performance, driving experience, and desirability, here’s how they compare:
The Best C63 AMGs for Different Buyers:
Category | Winner | Why? |
Best Overall C63 | W204 C63 AMG | Naturally aspirated V8, raw AMG experience. |
Best for Daily Driving | W205 C63 AMG | Turbo V8, modern tech, better fuel economy. |
Best Sound | W204 C63 AMG | The 6.2L V8 is one of the greatest-sounding AMGs ever. |
Most Powerful | W206 C63 AMG | Hybrid system delivers 671 hp, the tuning capabilities have not yet been explored on the W206. |
Best for Tuning | W205 C63 AMG | Twin-turbo V8 can reach 600+ hp easily. |
While the W206 is the most powerful and the W205 is the most balanced, the W204 C63 AMG is widely regarded as the best due to its naturally aspirated V8, aggressive character, and emotional driving experience.
If you want a brutal, loud, and raw AMG, the W204 is the ultimate choice. However, if you prefer a more refined but still thrilling AMG, the W205 is the better all-rounder.
